Catchment areas

Every school in Newport serves a catchment area and every Newport address will fall within the catchment area of both an English-medium and a Welsh-medium school.

Your catchment school is not automatically your nearest school

You can apply for your child to be admitted to any school but children living within a primary or secondary school’s catchment area are given priority over children living outside the catchment area, although this does not guarantee a place at the school.

If you decide not to apply for your catchment school at all this could increase the chances of your child not being allocated a place at a school you are happy with.

Your catchment school is not automatically your nearest school.

Please check your catchment before making an application for school as you may not be eligible for home to school transport assistance.

Welsh-medium primary catchment areas will change with effect from September 2021, please check your catchment school before making your application.
